Seizure / Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a disorder of the central nervous system involving abnormal brain activity that causes seizures or episodes of unusual behavior, sensations, and/or loss of awareness.

Signs and Symptoms of Epilepsy

Because epilepsy is caused by abnormal brain activity, seizures can affect any process that your brain coordinates.

Epileptic symptoms often vary among patients and may include:

  • Temporary confusion
  • A staring spell
  • Violent muscle contractions and uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
  • Loss of consciousness or awareness
  • Fear, anxiety, or déjà vu

While symptoms may vary depending on the type of seizure, a person with epilepsy tends to have the same type of seizure each time with symptoms that are similar with each episode. Doctors generally classify epileptic seizures as focal or generalized, depending on how the abnormal brain activity originates.

Treatment for Epilepsy in Southeast Michigan

The majority of those with epilepsy can control their seizures with prescribed medication or, depending on the type of abnormal brain activity and severity, with surgery. For some, lifelong treatment is required, while others eventually outgrow the condition.
